Afzal, Guest Blogger

If you think being a librarian is a dry and boring job, read this snippet from the life of Afzal, reference librarian.

I have always enjoyed serving the Lawton community while working at the reference desk. Finding books on various subjects including biographies has been a joyful task for me. But it is not very pleasant when customers roost in the library at closing time.

It was that time at the library on December 16, 2011, when four intruders flew in and flocked around the biographies. I knew people love their libraries but was surprised to find that in Lawton the pigeons also enjoy the environment of Lawton Public Library. Although it was closing time, I enjoyed and captured all of them with my camera.

If you need help while in the library, come to the reference desk.  Afzal or any of the other reference librarians will be happy to assist you.

Locally Grown Family Trees

The Family History Department houses a very unique collection of genealogical and local history material. Unlike many (most?) libraries we go out of our way to obtain locally produced research material from around the country (think: east, south and northeast of OK). Many library’s just purchase books from the “big boys”, the major genealogical publishing houses.  The good stuff however, is most often, available only from local genealogical/historical societies and local genealogists. This greatly enhances the research value of our collection as much of what we have is owned only by a handful of libraries nationwide. Needless to say, we may be the only OK library with this material.  The collection contains about 23,000 books and countless periodicals.  We also have over 6,000 rolls of microfilm, including all surviving copies of Comanche County newspapers up to 1920.
